Homemade Kettle Corn

Homemade Kettle Corn

John’s sister, Emily, gives great Christmas gifts.  I’ve mentioned the smoothie maker she gave us last Christmas in my baby food-making posts.  A couple years back she gave us a Whirly Pop stovetop popcorn maker with her own kettle corn recipe.  It’s amazing and so easy to make that I have to share it with you.  Not only is it really good, it’s a budget saver too.  We make buttery popcorn all the time with real butter too.  If you don’t have a Whirly Pop, you can make it on the stove with this method, just make sure you lift and shake the pot every few seconds while it’s popping so the kernels get coated with the topping.

You will need 1/4 cup oil, 1/2 cup popcorn kernels, 1/3 cup sugar and 1 tsp salt.

Pour it all in the bottom of the pot.  Cover and turn on medium high heat.  Begin turning the Whirly Pop handle and shake the pot every so often.  This helps the topping to coat the popcorn as it pops.

Keep turning and shaking until it’s done popping or you can turn the handle no more.

Immediately pour into a bowl and let cool.

It will be very sticky while warm, but after it cools it will separate into individual pieces as you toss or stir it.

I hope you have fun making your own kettle corn!
