About

Welcome to the makeshift nest!  My name is Julie, and I’m a homebody at heart.

I love hanging out with my nerdy but sweet Apple Genius husband and our two cute kiddos.  Most of my time is spent creating a nesting place for us in whatever space we are living.

When I move to a new place, I settle in immediately (even if it’s just for a few months).  I like to feel “nested” in my space – no matter how big or small.  You can never nest properly without a garden to escape to, whether it’s on a patio or in a yard.  That’s why I have always had gardens even if they are patio gardens full of potted flowers and edibles.

Cooking is one of my creative outlets which I do a lot of times by taste and smell.  I’m kind of like Remy in the Pixar movie Ratatouille.  I hardly ever follow a recipe completely.  It’s so much fun to change up a recipe to fit the ingredients you have at home.  The only problem is I don’t write them down. That is one of the reasons for creating this blog.  I will now have a running record of the yummy creations I “makeshift” up.

We are a one income family of four living on what we have.  Everything we do is on the cheap.  I love a good bargain, and “free” is even better.  A lot of the items in our home we have found by the curb or have been given by friends and family.  I love to fix them up to fit our home and style.

I have never owned a home, but I’ve always believed that you can make wherever you live a home by giving it your personal touch. The things I have collected over the years are a mixture of family pieces, garage sale finds (my father-in-law is the king of estate & garage sales), stuff I’ve collected since college and Ikea.  When I get bored, I start moving things from room to room just to mix it up.  It usually makes a huge mess until it looks just how I pictured it in my head.  Sometimes, it takes me a few times to get it right.  That’s what the makeshift nest is all about – making a beautiful life with what you have.
